I have had an interest in building a Pelican 16' since I saw an article about 1972 and ordered the building plan today (5.31.2002). I hope to start construction in june. I quess my interest hasn't been to drastic since it took about 30 years to order the plans. In the time I have done some hourly sailing and took a sailing course at the Washington Marina. The AVYC was recommended by a friend at work. My water body interest is the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.

10 Year Power Boater. Great Lakes. Commodore of Wyandotte Yacht Club 2002. 35 Mainship.

I want to thank you for the use of one of your jokes. I recently had my 'Commodore's Ball" and needed a spirited joke to set the tone for the evening without offending anyone. Well, I found it on your joke page and it was a success. Thank you very much.

Just wanted to add my two cents with all the other members. I would have to say my favorite body of water would be the Susquhanna river, due to all the family time spent on our boat there. When I was younger, my Dad had a party boat and every Saturday we would load the car and head to the river. However, before play time, once a month, my brother and I had to wash the pontoons so the dirt would not slow us down. At the time, being kids, we were annoyed. But, now that I am older and grown.... I look back and those were some of the best times that we had together. Cleaning, well.... But, the sunning, skiing, swimming, playing in the sand... Just being together and enjoying each other's company. Water will now always be equated in my mind with Family, Fun, and LOVE!!!!

We were sailors for 46 years, cruised 30,000 miles which included Mexico, South Seas, Calif. coast, Oregon, Washington, Canada, and Southeast Alaska in a Morgan 41 sloop. We became power boaters 5 years ago. We have a 46' Choey Lee Trawler, 1979, which we brought back from Detroit mostly under its own power to San Francisco.

First we had a ball cruising the Lake Erie, Welland Canal, Lake Ontario, Oswego Canal, Hudson River, up to Maine, back down the Atlantic to the Inland Waterways to Florida. We had been out a year. Put the boat on United Yacht Transport to Lazaro Cardenas Mexico (4000 miles in 11 days) which saved us a year because of following weather patterns, the coast to get fuel etc. What it shows is when you love boats your age doesn't matter until you try to get up in the morning. The reason I found this web site was because I was looking for a joke to start off my keynote speech for the Trawler Fest in Pouslbo WA. in June. Got any good ones?

Oh, just a few hundred Marlene! Feel free to use any you wish. I'm sure I don't want to
cross an experienced sailor and traveler like you. Welcome to the club!

I own a 34 ft. trawler I keep on Lake Lanier Georgia. Since it is "land locked", two good friends of mine I trailer their 24 ft sea rey boats down to Florida about six times a summer. We have cruised just about all of coastal Florida, Georgia, and SC. We made the crossing from Fla to Bimini in 6-8 ft seas. Never want to do that again in 24 ft boat.

Live in Atlanta most of the time, but have a home on Lake Glenville near Cashiers in Western North Carolina. Lake is 3500 feet elevation, 26 miles of shore, nice and fun. Have a 21' Regal bowrider, holds the family and the dog, with enough power for tubing and skiing. Found your web site using the Yahoo search engine asking for "recreational boating" sites. Liked what I read, loved the jokes, so I'm joining up.

My husband and I own an 8' Sabot, we bought used, and restored. We have great fun sailing it, we have mostly sailed in Long Beach Harbor. We are looking for other local areas to sail. Does anyone know of any? I think your club is great, you don't have to be rich to join, and have fun! This club is a great idea! I found your club on the web, looking for areas to sail, which can take a 8' Sabot.

Just got back from ft. Lauderdale FL last night. My twin sons Brendan and Ryan had a week off from seventh grade for spring break, so we flew down to Florida to visit grandma and grandpa.

Wednesday we went out on our friend Capt. Ken Smith's 40 foot Hatteras Lady Pamela II. Brendan caught the first fish, a bonita that Capt Ken said was the biggest he had ever seen, I would guess 25 to 30 lbs. then Ryan hooked what we all thought was a small baracuda that turned out to be a bluefish. We didn't know they swam that far south. Capt Ken said you can't eat them after they have been in warm water for a while. While breaking for lunch Capt spotted a large hammerhead from the bridge while he headed in its direction we quick rigged a large hunk of kingfish with three large hooks to a steel leader to a swivel to 80 lb test and threw it over, trolling past him we guessed him to be at least a ten footer. He went for the bait and ran about 200 feet of line on light drag before spitting it out without a hook ever setting firmly.

At this point our live bait was looking a little sluggish in the live well so we threw out lures on spinners for a while and took in some mullet, blue runners and goggle eyes so we could kite for sail. That wasted most of the afternoon without a bite so before we went in we went back to trolling. I caught a nice size amberjack that gave me a real nice fight. and then Ryan hooked what we all agreed had to be something big.

A year or two ago I would have taken the rod from him just to make sure we didn't lose the monster but Ryan is thirteen now and getting almost as tall as dad so I proudly let him handle it himself knowing he would ask for help if he needed it. I got behind the chair and turned it to face the fish for him and whispered encouragement the whole fight and thirty minutes later about ten feet below I saw the silver flash of a very larege barracuda. I grabbed a glove and a gaff and when he came over the transom he looked as long as the gaff itself. When he stopped flapping about the cockpit enough to hold a tape to him he measured every bit of fifty two inches nose to tail, a good four inches longer than the biggest cuda I ever caught.

Now we're back in Jersey waiting for our first striper of the season-maybe this weekend. Regards Walt

Capt.Jim,

Thanx for producing a great newsletter and puting together aquanauts that would otherwise never have met. Enjoy boating in a Larson Cabrio 22 sport boat (2000) with my fiance, think that's French for got U hooked and taking U down the aisle; so being the good Capt,,took Karen to Wynn Dixie and walked down the confectionery aisle, it was sweet.

We pleasured the weekend at Melbourne Marina with 12 0ther boats in our club(Central Florida Cruise Club)never made it to the art show, had visited a place at the marina that serves beverages, got so involved shmoozing Karen, salt water and boating will do that to you,U know! The garlic butter chicken wings&fried mahi strips hit the spot.Sunday we departed at 1200 hours and headed south on the ICW to marker 21 where there is an island, the larger boats threw out hooks and we tied on to the secured vessels, to damn lazy to throw my own anchor; dopped the swim platform ladders and began to enjoy the sun and water. The friendship between boating buddies becomes stronger as we enjoy the LOVE of boating and share our lifes experiences. The trip back to marker #3 and Ballard State Park,Melbourne, Florida,a super launch site; was smooth.

I recently purchased my first boat, a 26' Sea Ray, and use it exclusively on the Chesapeake Bay. Being a new boater, I am always looking for new information to help me with my weekend adventures.

Own a Bristol 30, my fourth ocean cruising boat. Single male, 64, retired, cruises the New England coast. Will consider swapping similar boats for a week of cruising in another area. I do most of my own maintenance.
