I Dont' have a favorite body of water. I am partial to the Potomac, the Atlantic, Virginia Tile water area, OuterBanks of NC, the Gulf of Mexico and the Chesapeake Bay. I own two home made plywood boats and a plastic canoe. Just getting out on the water is good enough for me.

Relinda, my wife, and I sail a 37 Irwin CC on Charlotte Harbor, Fla. I have lived in Punta Gorda for 25 yrs and have been sailing now with my Best Mate for 13 years. In about 4 1/2 years we will be able to cut the land lines and get out of here for at least a year and then hopefully decide we like it well enough to move on board for good.
Fair winds to all.

Hi Freinds,

Most of my boating activity centers around fishing. I live in the northeastern corner of Connecticut, which gives me access to great trout and bass waters, as well as the Atlantic ocean, only about an hours drive away. I currently own two boats. One is what I call My "skinny" water boat used for freshwater lakes and ponds. The other is an 18' "Seasprite" runabout that I restored and retrofitted for fishing Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. I have a lot of mechanical knowledge about boats and their systems, and would be happy to answer questions from members seeking to save a few dollars on repairs.

I didn't think of myself as a skipper or captain until I made my last solo cruise. I have heard that the act of simply casting off your dock lines and returning safely to secure them again makes a sailor.

You can acquire credentials through the Coast Guard, but becoming captain requires that you obtain real experience on the open water. That is how I make my claim of being captain. I've been sailing since I was twelve. Thus, I have become adept at handling a boat and meeting the basic criteria as a sailor of both powered and sailing vessels. In November, I cast off on a four day voyage in my twenty-three foot sloop to journey from Washington, NC to Ocracoke Island, NC. The course required navigating across the Pamlico Sound, negotiating a channel into an unknown harbor and making the return trip. I did this with an old chart and a compass. The voyage was completed safely without a VHF radio, no GPS, no autopilot or other electronic wizardry only the basic USCG equipment and adequate provisions. I want labor through all of the particulars and some may see this as a minor feat. However, those that have made such a voyage will understand the sense of accomplishment that follows such an adventure and realizing that there is more to being a captain than handling a boat.

It is a feeling of pride that comes from realizing that you have joined a speci! al group known as mariners. Those of us that challenge the open water with an eye on the horizon and a hand upon the tiller. I don't intend to cast disparity upon the lake bound. You may have a way to make your claim.

You should make the journey because it is all about attitude and adventure.

First, I am glad to hear from you. My wife Ann and I are both retired and live on Lake Sinclair in Putnam County Ga. It is about 15,000 acre's with 500 miles shoreline. We also have a small place on the coast below Savannah. We enjoy fishing the lake but we like offshore fishing the Atlantic the best. I hold a Coast Guard License. We have a 20' dual console with outboard that we use for the lake and inshore fishing and a 25' cabin with dual I/O that we use offshore fishing and just crusing. I found your web when looking for a printable calander several years age. Even thought I had not heard from you for sometime I continued to check your web site. I enjoy reading what other boaters are doing. I think that boater safety education and boat handling and rules of the road education are much needed on our waters. We do not need more rules, just learn and enforce those existing. You have great web site and continue the good work. Captn. J

I have been an avid boater for quite some time now and cruise my Avanti along the Tennessee River and it's tributaries, we've recently competed another 400 mile trip and are in the planning stages of our next adventure...our boat "the divine MISS T " has now logged over 4300 miles and we have enjoyed meeting some of the most colorful people in the world along these waterways.

Our homeport is now Gold Point Yacht Harbor, located a few miles up-stream from Chattanooga,Tn. If your travelling along this waterway & see us give us a shout... I found the AVYC while browsing the net one night & at once signed up...

I feel that Capt.Jim has accomplished a web presence for the boaters out there that he should be VERY proud of and when available I want to be the one to purchase the very first burgee to fly on the bow of our boat...my hats off to ya' Jim on Lake Chickamauga.

Comfortable for 4 with a galley, dinette, marine head, vberth and 2 quarter berths. We sail on a large resevoir in Northern California ( Trinity Lake ) and for 7 weeksevery summer in Puget Sound and Canadian waters to the north. I live in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York and do most of my boating on the Hudson.River. For those of you that have never done the Hudson you are missing the best kept secrets about NY. It is a must. We have a 20' Forewinns C/C right now but are we are selling her and looking for something bigger. In the 26 - 28' range. I spend most of my day at work on the water also. I work of the Army Corp of Engineers in NY and oversee most of the dredging operations in New York Harbor, Long Island and New Jersey Federal Waterways. It's a Great job. I get to do what I love (be on the water) and get paid for it. The down side is that most of the dredging is done in the winter. But the way I look at it a bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office!

Have been boating on Lake Erie, Inland Lakes and Rivers, along with the East Coast and ICW and Gulf of Mexico for the past 50+ years, and am still enjoying it VERY much. I have also done a little boating in Europe. My favorite place is Georgian Bay. I have a Baha Cruisers Sportfisher and a Grumman Center Console that is trailerable, and is just right for exploring ALL those beautiful Canadian lakes. (which we do every summer). I also have a 10.5 ft. Achilles with a 9.9 h.p. Merc. that goes nicely into the trunk of the car when we are traveling to areas where we've never been before. Most places usually have some type of water that can be explored, and we have had grrrrreat times doing that. Keep up the good work with AVYC!

First, and above all, our condolences. It's a voyage we all must take. Both Debbie and I have been where you are and understand the way it is for those of us left behind. We were unsure if we should continue with the rest of the page after entering our E mail (computers and I have been at war for a while) and decided to err on the side of safety as we insist on continuing with the club. In January we will lay the keel for a Bruce Roberts Offshore 44 (plans in hand, but will probably skip the virgin sacrifice). Pictures and prose to follow. Our best wishes for a peaceful Holiday.

I have cruised Florida, the keys and the Bahamas for three to four months in the winter for approximately 12 trips most of that time I had a 1982 Freedom 25 cat sloop with an outboard engine. I now have a 1976 Albin 25 trawler with sail. It is the perfect vessel for the shallow waters in the area that I cruise. I wish I had this boat from the start. My wife and I both love to travel by water and injoy the million dollar view when ever we drop the hook. I store it on a trailer on the east coast of Florida in the Ft. Pierce area. I keep a heavy tarp over it through the summer when I return to my home is in Colorado.

With the holidays upon us, thought we would post a note wishing all a joyous and safe Christmastide. We safely completed our first season on the Gulf and are already planning for further explorations when we get the hull wet again in January. Anyone with a trailer boat who spends their time as I did on the lakes of the interior owes it to themself to plan a vacation to the blue water. With a little careful planning even a small craft like our Catalina 22 can venture out where the dolphin play. We have, and it was the highlight of a season filled with highlights (including one memorable night we dallied late and returned to port by the dark of the moon, playing tag with the barrier islands trusting in our GPS and my wife's sense of direction to put us past the breakwater slam on target).
